Dr. Akshay Tiwari is the Director Musculoskeletal Oncology at Max Institute of Cancer Care, Max Superspeciality Hospital, Saket. He is a fellowship trained Musculoskeletal/ Orthopedic oncologist who found the care of patients suffering from cancers/ tumors of bone and soft tissue as his calling during his orthopaedic residency, and went on to train extensively in this highly specialised field. His career as a Consultant Orthopedic Oncologist spans more than a decade, and his areas of interest are primary malignant bone tumors, soft tissue sarcomas, benign aggressive bone tumors and metastatic bone disease. After setting up the first exclusive Musculoskeletal/ Orthopedic oncology unit in Delhi- NCR, Dr Akshay has performed more than 2000 surgeries exclusively for patients suffering from bone and soft tissue tumours. Use of technology to improve patient care is close to his heart; the first Stryker Nav 3 Navigation system for orthopedic oncology in India was set up at Max Institute of Cancer Care, Saket, and its use was pioneered by Dr Akshay Tiwari.
Dr. Akshay has been trained at world-renowned institutes of excellence in musculoskeletal oncology i.e Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute, Italy and Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, and has numerous national and international publications and presentations on musculoskeletal oncology to his credit. He is on the orthopedic oncology editorial boards of renowned journals and his area of surgical expertise includes limb saving surgery for bone and soft tissue tumors, reconstructive orthopedic surgery, surgical management of spinal tumors, and the use of computer navigation for accurate and safe removal of bone tumors in complex areas. Being one of the very few orthopedic surgeons in the country who are dedicated purely to bone and soft tissue tumors , he has developed keen interest in surgeries such as internal hemipelvectomy, extra corporeal radiotherapy and reimplantation of bone tumors, total femur replacement, en bloc resection of sarcomas of the spine and rotationplasty.
Constant learning comes from teaching, and many fellows have trained themselves in orthopaedic oncology with Dr Akshay. Multidisciplinary management is at the core of his work, and all his decisions are based on a “Musculoskeletal Oncology Disease Management Group”, which is a group of people from all specialties exclusively involved in sarcoma care. As the Director Musculoskeletal Oncology at Max Institute of Cancer Care, Dr Akshay proudly leads a team of professionals who adhere strictly to evidence based principles combined with innovations individualized to the needs of the patient, in order to completely remove/ treat the disease while maintaining the form and function of the limb affected by cancer.
